Yaphank, New York

Yaphank is located in the south part of the Town of Brookhaven. It is served by the Longwood Central School District, except for extreme southwestern Yaphank, which is served by the South Country Central School District.

Captain Robert Robinson came to Yaphank and built his Dutch Colonial house with the building dated at 1726. He was then granted permission to dam the Carmans River to build a mill across the street from his house. The construction of this mill in 1739 was considered the founding date of the Hamlet of Yaphank.[5]

In the mid 18th century, a man named John Homan built two mills along the Carmans River, which runs directly through the center of the town. These two mills inspired the first name for the town: Millville. The translator/author Mary Louise Booth was born in Millville in 1831. In 1846 a post office was opened in the town, but because there were thirteen other towns named "Millville" in New York state at the time, the town was renamed "Yaphank", from the local Native American word Yamphanke, meaning "bank of a river".

Yonkers, New York

Yonkers (/ˈjɒŋkərz/[5]) is a city in Westchester County, New York. It is the fourth most populous city in the U.S. state of New York, behind New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester. The population of Yonkers was 195,976 as enumerated in the 2010 United States Census and is estimated to have increased by 2.5% to 200,807 in 2016.[6] It is an inner suburb of New York City, directly to the north of the Bronx and approximately two miles (3 km) north of the northernmost point in Manhattan.

Yonkers' downtown is centered on a plaza known as Getty Square, where the municipal government is located. The downtown area also houses significant local businesses and non-profits, and serves as a major retail hub for Yonkers and the northwest Bronx.

The city is home to several attractions, including Untermyer Park; Hudson River Museum; Saw Mill River daylighting, wherein a parking lot was removed to uncover a river; Science Barge; Sherwood House; and Yonkers Raceway, a harness racing track that has renovated its grounds and clubhouse and added legalized video slot machine gambling in 2006 in a "racino" called Empire City.

New York City

The City of New York, usually called either New York City (NYC) or simply New York (NY), is the most populous city in the United States and thus also in the state of New York.[11] With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698[7] distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2),[12][13] New York is also the most densely populated major city in the United States.[14] Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass[15] and one of the world's most populous megacities,[16][17] with an estimated 20,320,876 people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23,876,155 residents in its Combined Statistical Area.[4][5] A global power city,[18] New York City has been described as the cultural,[19][20][21][22] financial,[23][24] and media capital of the world,[25][26] and exerts a significant impact upon commerce,[24] entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports. The city's fast pace[27][28] has inspired the term New York minute.[29] Home to the headquarters of the United Nations,[30] New York is an important center for international diplomacy.[31][32]

Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors,[33][34] New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York.[35] The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898.[36] The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States.[37] As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,[38][39][40] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.[39][41][42] New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States,[43] the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world.[44] In 2017, the New York metropolitan area produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of US$1.73 trillion.[9] If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world.[45] New York is home to the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world.[46]

New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626.[47] The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664[47] and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.[48] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.[49] It has been the country's largest city since 1790.[50] The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries[51] and is an international symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace.[52] In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship,[53]social tolerance,[54] and environmental sustainability,[55][56] and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.[57]

NY

Yorktown Heights, New York

Yorktown Heights is in the town of Yorktown, New York, in northern Westchester County, 45 miles from New York City, with forty square miles of rolling hills, farmland, residential areas and light industry including the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. First settled in 1683, Yorktown was of strategic importance during the American Revolution, with the Pines Bridge crossing of the Croton River guarded by the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, an integrated unit which included African Americans and Native Americans. Yorktown was incorporated in 1788 and named in commemoration of the Franco-American decisive victory at Yorktown, Virginia. The Yorktown Heights Railroad Station, which last had passenger service on the New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division in 1958, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.[4]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 7,972 people, 2,629 households, and 2,163 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,399.3/mi² (540.0/km²). There were 2,661 housing units at an average density of 467.1/mi² (180.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.49% White, 2.41% African American, 0.06% Native American, 4.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.59% of the population.

There were 2,629 households out of which 44.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.0% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.02 and the average family size was 3.37.

Yorkville, Manhattan

Yorkville is a neighborhood in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Its southern boundary is East 79th Street, its northern East 96th Street, its western Third Avenue, and its eastern the East River.[2]

In August 1776, George Washington stationed half of his Continental Army in Manhattan, with many troops in the Yorkville area in defensive positions along the East River to protect the other half of his army if they were to retreat from Brooklyn, and to inflict damage on invading land and sea forces.[4] Following the Battle of Long Island defeat on August 27, the Continentals implemented an orderly pivoting retreat in the Yorkville area, leading the enemy to entice the Continentals to fight by piping "Fly Away", about a fox running away from hounds. The Continentals' disciplined northerly retreat led to the successful Battle of Harlem Heights in September 1776.[5]

In 1815, the Upper East Side was a farmland and market garden district.[6] The Boston Post Road traversed the Upper East Side, locally called the Eastern Post Road; milepost 6 was near the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 81st Street. From 1833 to 1837 the New York and Harlem Railroad, one of the earliest railway systems in the United States, was extended through the Upper East Side along Fourth Avenue (later renamed Park Avenue).[7] A hamlet grew near the 86th Street station, becoming the Yorkville neighborhood as gradual yet steady commercial development occurred. The current street grid was laid-out between 1839 and 1844 as part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, so the Eastern Post Road was abandoned. The community had been referred to as Yorkville before 1867.[8]

Youngstown, New York

The village's early growth was under the protection of Fort Niagara.[citation needed] The village was destroyed by the British in 1813 during the War of 1812.[citation needed] The Village of Youngstown was incorporated in 1854, named after John Young .[4]

Youngstown is an historic village located at the northwestern corner of the state where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. In an area known to the Indians for hundreds of years, the French explorer La Salle left his mark by building a small fort in 1670, less than a mile north of where the village now stands. The French gained control of the Great Lakes area and by 1727 built the "Castle" which became the centerpiece of Old Fort Niagara.

John Young, who lived across the river, saw opportunities on this side and built a store on the landing area in 1809. In 1811, he bought Lots 1 and 2 of the Mile Reserve. These included all the property from what is now the north side of Falkner Park and as far south as Campbell Street and from the river eastward to what is now the Niagara Scenic Parkway.

County Route 149 (Sullivan County, New York)

County Route 149 (CR 149) is a 8.69-mile (13.99 km) county route in northern Sullivan County, New York, in the United States. The route runs from an intersection with New York State Route 52 (NY 52) in the Callicoon community of Youngsville to an intersection with CR 178 in the Rockland community of Livingston Manor. CR 149 was originally designated as New York State Route 284 in 1930.

CR 149 begins at an intersection with NY 52 in the community of Youngsville. The route progresses northward, passing and paralleling Tremper Road, a dead-end road. CR 149 passes by several residential homes in Youngsville, along with one local commercial building. After leaving the community, CR 149 continues to the north as Shandelee Road, passing through the residential surroundings. After passing by a few more residences, Shandelee Road makes a bend to the northwest, and into more dense woodlands in the area. About a mile north of Youngsville, CR 149 continues its way northward, passing by a local residence, and intersects with Stump Pond Road, which heads westward from the main highway. Shandalee Road makes another bend, this time to the north, passing through moderate development for about another mile. A short distance into the bend, the woodlands that were surrounding the highway clear and the highway becomes surrounded by fields and residential homes.[3]

After a short gap in the clearing, CR 149 intersects with Hardenburg Road, a local road, in another clearing. After Hardenburg Road, Shandelee Road begins to bend in different directions, several times to the west and several times to the east, intersecting with Meyer Road at a fork. CR 149, which continues to the left at the fork, heads to the northwest, paralleling Meyer Road to the west. The residences begin to disappear and CR 149 continues into a more wooded area, where it intersects with Whittendale Road, a local dead-end road. A short distance from Whittendale Road, CR 149 makes a sharp bend to the northeast, intersecting with the northern termini of Stump Pond Road and Meyer Road. Near the intersection with Gilda Lane, CR 149 passes the Sand Pond, and intersects with a series of short local roads. Paralleling the shores of Sand Pond for a short distance, Shandelee Road begins to enter the community of Shandelee. There, the highway intersects with Shandelee Lake Road, a short connector highway in the area. CR 149 makes a curve to the east, following Shandelee Road for a distance, making several winds in direction until the alignment turns towards the northeast. Shandelee Road continues to the northeast, passing through local woodlands and fields. As CR 149 nears Livingston Manor, the name changes from Shandelee Road to Main Street.[3]

Yulan, New York

Yulan is a community and census tract in Sullivan County, New York, United States. It is in area code 845 (exchange 557) and has zip code 12792. Neighboring Hamlets Shohola, PA, Eldred, NY, and Narrowsburg, NY. [1] It is the location of a Roman Catholic church, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. As of 2014, Yulan has a population of 300 people, 66.5% of which are married. Toasperns Pond, Montgomery Lake, Bodine lake, and Washington Lake are all in Yulan.

Camp David Accords

The Camp David Accords were signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on 17 September 1978, following twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David.[1] The two framework agreements were signed at the White House, and were witnessed by United States President Jimmy Carter. The second of these frameworks (A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel) led directly to the 1979 Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty. Due to the agreement, Sadat and Begin received the shared 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. The first framework (A Framework for Peace in the Middle East), which dealt with the Palestinian territories, was written without participation of the Palestinians and was condemned by the United Nations.

Carter's and Secretary of State Cyrus Vance's exploratory meetings gave a basic plan for reinvigorating the peace process based on a Geneva Peace Conference and had presented three main objectives for Arab–Israeli peace: Arab recognition of Israel's right to exist in peace, Israel's withdrawal from occupied territories gained in the Six-Day War through negotiating efforts with neighboring Arab nations to ensure that Israel's security would not be threatened and securing an undivided Jerusalem.[2]

The Camp David Accords were the result of 14 months of diplomatic efforts by Egypt, Israel, and the United States that began after Jimmy Carter became President.[3] The efforts initially focused on a comprehensive resolution of disputes between Israel and the Arab countries, gradually evolving into a search for a bilateral agreement between Israel and Egypt.[4]
