Mesquite, Nevada

Mesquite is a U.S. city in Clark County, Nevada, adjacent to the Arizona state line and 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. As of July 1, 2017, the United States Census estimates that the city had a population of 18,541.[6] The city is located in the Virgin River valley adjacent to the Virgin Mountains in the northeastern part of the Mojave Desert. It is home to a growing retirement community, as well as several casino resorts and golf courses.

Mesquite was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1880, who called it Mesquite Flat. The community was finally established on the third attempt after having been flooded out from the waters of the Virgin River. The name was later shortened to Mesquite, and the city was incorporated 1984. The community was named for the mesquite timber near the original town site.[7] Mesquite, like nearby Bunkerville, had its origins in farming. The Peppermill Mesquite casino, which opened in the 1970s, drove Mesquite's diversified economy. The city incorporated in 1984 and established a master development plan during the early 1990s.[2] In the mid-1990s, more casinos opened.[8] By 2006, Mesquite was one of the fastest-growing small towns in the United States, though the late-2000s recession led to the closure of both the Mesquite Star and Oasis (formerly The Peppermill) casinos.[2]

Mesquite occupies the northeast corner of Clark County and extends north into the southeast corner of Lincoln County. The eastern border of the city is the Arizona state line. The city is in the Virgin River valley, occupying the northern side of the river. The city lies adjacent to the Virgin Mountains in the northeastern Mojave Desert near the southern mouth of the Virgin River Gorge.

Nissan NV (North America)

The Nissan NV (Nissan Van) is the first full-size van built by the Japanese automaker for the United States, Mexico and Canada, and sold by Nissan.[2] Until the introduction of the Nissan NV, Mexico was the only country in North America selling a full-size Nissan Van, as the Nissan Urvan was sold there. Upon the introduction of the NV, it replaced the Urvan for Mexico. There was also a small pickup truck sold in Thailand as the "Nissan NV", this was based on the AD Wagon (Y10), a relative of the Nissan Sunny.

The NV uses the same F-Alpha platform as does the Nissan Titan full-size pickup, but due to the need for a flat loading floor it is highly modified and they end up sharing mainly powertrain pieces and some appearance aspects. The NV is also only available with rear-wheel drive, coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission.[3] The NV is not targeted directly at the (mainly fleet) buyers of the Ford E-Series and Chevrolet Express, but rather at private users who have hitherto often been buying more comfortable pickup trucks.[4] The 4.0-litre V6 engine outputs 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, while the 5.6-litre V8 engine outputs 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque.[5] The V8-engined versions are also electronically limited to a top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h).[3]

The NV1500 has a load capacity of 2,590 lb (1,175 kg), similar to the GMC/Chevrolet cargo van using the same "1500" designation, and informally known as a "half-ton". It is only available with the 4-litre V6. It is available in S or SV trim, with the SV receiving power door locks, windows, outside mirrors and 17" styled steel wheels.

Lake Mead

Lake Mead is a lake on the Colorado River, about 24 mi (39 km) from the Las Vegas Strip, southeast of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. It is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of water capacity. Formed by the Hoover Dam, the reservoir serves water to the states of Arizona, California, and Nevada, as well as some of Mexico providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.[1]

At maximum capacity, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long, 532 feet (162 m) at its greatest depth, has a surface elevation of 1,221.4 feet (372.3 m) above sea level and 247 square miles (640 km2) of surface area, and contains 26.12 million acre feet (32,220,000 ML) of water.

The lake has not reached full capacity, however, since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand.[2][3][4] As of August 2017[update], Lake Mead was at approximately 40% of full capacity with 10 million acre feet (12,000,000 ML) of held water.[5][6] It has been smaller than Lake Powell (the second largest US reservoir when both are full) since 2013.[7][8][9]

List of brothels in Nevada

This is a historical list of the legal brothels in Nevada. They are arranged by name within location (the nearest town or named place) within each county that licenses such establishments. Defunct establishments are retained for completeness. Note, however, that this list so far only covers the modern era of brothel prostitution in Nevada, from about 1950 onward, after the closure of the red light districts of Reno and Las Vegas.

According to the Nevada Brothel List site, there are 21 legal brothels in Nevada as of February 2018,[1] down from its peak of 35 in the early 1980s.[2] While prostitution is legal in parts of Nevada, it is illegal outside these licensed brothels. Prostitution is illegal under state law in Clark County, which contains Las Vegas and its metropolitan area. Other counties may choose to allow it, if they desire to. Currently Carson City (an independent city), Douglas County, Eureka County,[3]Lincoln County, Pershing County[4] and Washoe County (which contains Reno) ban brothels. The other counties permit brothels, but some of them do not currently have any active brothels.

Ely City Council restricted brothels to one area on the outskirts in 1959. At one stage the brothels covered three blocks and employed over 400 women. The two remaining brothels are located in "Bronc Alley" red-light district in High Street.[43]

Reno, Nevada

Reno (/ˈriːnoʊ/ REE-noh) is a city in the U.S. state of Nevada, located in the western part of the state, approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Lake Tahoe. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World",[2] Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos. It is the county seat of Washoe County, in the northwestern part of the state. The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area (along with Sparks and other suburbs) occupies a valley informally known as the Truckee Meadows. It is named after Union Major General Jesse L. Reno, who was killed in action at the Battle of South Mountain on Fox's Gap.

Reno is the third-most populous city in Nevada after Las Vegas and Henderson and the most populous city in the state outside the Las Vegas Valley, with an estimated population of 248,853 in 2017.[3] Reno is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area, which consists of all of both Washoe and Storey counties and has a 2017 estimated population of 464,593.[4]

Archaeological finds place the eastern border for the prehistoric Martis people in the Reno area.[5] As early as the mid 1850s a few pioneers settled in the Truckee Meadows, a relatively fertile valley through which the Truckee River made its way from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. In addition to subsistence farming, these early residents could pick up business from travelers along the California Trail, which followed the Truckee westward, before branching off towards Donner Lake, where the formidable obstacle of the Sierra Nevada began.

Tonopah, Nevada

Tonopah is an unincorporated town[3] in and the county seat of Nye County, Nevada, United States.[4] It is located at the junction of U.S. Routes 6 and 95, approximately midway between Las Vegas and Reno. In the 2010 census, the population was 2,478. The census-designated place (CDP) of Tonopah has a total area of 16.2 square miles (42 km2), all land.

The European-American community began circa 1900 with the discovery of silver-rich ore by prospector Jim Butler. The legendary tale of discovery says that he went looking for a burro that had wandered off during the night and sought shelter near a rock outcropping. When Butler discovered the animal the next morning, he picked up a rock to throw at it in frustration, noticing that the rock was unusually heavy. He had stumbled upon the second-richest silver strike in Nevada history.[citation needed]

Men of wealth and power entered the region to consolidate the mines and reinvest their profits into the infrastructure of the town of Tonopah. George Wingfield, a 24-year-old poker player when he arrived in Tonopah, played poker and dealt faro in the town saloons. Once he had a small bankroll, he talked Jack Carey, owner of the Tonopah Club, into taking him in as a partner and to file for a gaming license. In 1903, miners rioted against Chinese workers in Tonopah. This resulted in China enforcing a boycott in China of U.S. imported goods.

Minden, Nevada

Minden is an unincorporated town in Douglas County, Nevada, United States.[1] The population was 3,001 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County[2] and is adjacent to the town of Gardnerville. It was founded in 1906 by Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg Jr., who named it after the town of Minden, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was near his father's birthplace.[3] A large share of the first settlers were Germans.[4] Minden was founded on company land of the Dangberg Home Ranch and Dangberg commissioned most of the town's early buildings.[5] Minden has had a post office since 1906.[6]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) of Minden has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11 km2), of which 4.3 square miles (11 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.47%) is water.

The Carson Valley and Minden are considered one of the top gliding spots in the world. Flights of over 990 miles (1,600 km) have been made on sailplanes from this location. Its location, east of the Sierra Nevada range, favors lee wave formation. East of the Pine Nuts mountains is the Nevada desert, one of the best thermal generators in the world.

Round Mountain, Nevada

Round Mountain is best known for the Round Mountain Gold Mine, a large open pit heap-leach gold mine owned by Kinross Gold Corporation. The first gold production from the Round Mountain District was in 1906, and by 2006 the mine had produced over 10 million ounces of gold, worth about US$9.5 billion at 2009 prices. Ore reserves and resources total about 1.8 million ounces of gold as of the end of 2007.[1] The gold occurs on the rim of an ancient collapsed caldera and is mainly fine-grained, with visible (and sometimes spectacular) gold occurring in structural intersections.[4]

While the original town of Round Mountain remains near the current mining operation, the construction of Hadley served, in essence, as a relocation of the former community. As such, and with the new town existing as of, by, and for Round Mountain Gold, the surrounding areas, including both towns (occasionally including the town of Carvers as well), are often generically referred to as Round Mountain.

Hadley has an elementary school, a high school, a football field, a library, an indoor swimming pool, a golf course, three baseball fields, a fitness trail around the gym and baseball fields, a post office, a grocery store, two gym facilities (one with a weight room, treadmill room, and two racquetball courts), a recreational park, a gas station/laundromat, a bed & breakfast, a few churches, a fishing pond, two tennis courts, a community center, a fire department, a E.M.S. ambulance service, a RV park, storage units, a nail salon, horse corrals, a restaurant/bar, and many children's playgrounds.

Tuscarora, Nevada

Tuscarora is an unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada.[1] It is home to two small schools provided by the Elko County School District. Tuscarora is part of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Tuscarora was founded in Elko County after an expedition by trader William Heath to find gold. The community derives its name from the Tuscarora people.[2] As miners flocked to the town, a fort was built to offer protection from Indian raids and a water ditch was created to supply the town with water. Many Chinese men who had been employed by the Central Pacific Railroad (CPR) relocated to the town and began placer mining. A boom began following the discovery of silver ore.[3] A post office was established at Tuscarora in 1871.[4]

Moapa Valley, Nevada

Moapa Valley is an unincorporated town[1] and census-designated place in Clark County, Nevada, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 6,924.[2] The valley in which the community lies, also named Moapa Valley, is about 40 miles (64 km) long and lies roughly northwest to southeast.

The Muddy River, formerly called the Moapa River, originates from the Warm Springs Natural Area and flows through the valley before emptying into Lake Mead. The communities of Moapa Town, Logandale and Overton are located in the valley. Logandale is about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Moapa Town, and Overton is about 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Logandale. Prior to the creation of Lake Mead, Moapa Valley also included the town of St. Thomas, which was abandoned in 1938 due to the rising lake level.

Moapa Valley is at an elevation of 1,265 ft (386 m) above sea level. The United States Census Bureau gives the census-designated place (CDP) of Moapa Valley (which may not coincide exactly with the town boundaries) a total area of 43.7 square miles (113.2 km2), of which 43.7 square miles (113.1 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.05%, is water.[3]
